What Amazon’s New Kindle App Means

One of the big stories in the publishing world today was Amazon's release of their Cloud Reader. This is significant for a couple of reasons. The first is obvious, it lets Amazon have an "app" on the iPad/iPod while retaining control and all of the profit that the app generates (telling Apple where to stick their 30% fee).

Control Freak

The major entertainment companies (Labels, Publishers, Studios) are in the business to create content.

So am I, so are you. There's nothing wrong with making a buck with our various talents and skills - we all need to eat.

The question is, how do we control our intellectual property? Should we control it?

A Warning

I've been noticing a lot of "publishing .. ummm, things" popping up. Some are doing some very good things for authors, some.. well how can I put this nicely... they don't have a clue.

Going North

It's a never ending debate that goes on and on, and I've participated in my share of banter. If you know me, you know which side I fall on, but that's not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about "going North".

Getting The Most Out Of Klout

Klout is a service that takes your social media activity (Twitter and Facebook) and gives you a "score". This score supposedly indicates how awesome you are online. I discovered Klout a while back and I thought it had died, but recently there's been a lot of talk and excitement over Klout.

Google has tried the "social thing" before. They've failed. They're a search company, not a social company- right?. Google+ (later referred to simply as G+) proves they are an Internet Company.

How Will People Find Me?

People don't find you, YOU find them, at least some of them (I'll explain later). Waiting around hoping for people to somehow magically know you exist is never going to happen. Much like any other business, you need to market yourself, and spread the word about how awesome you are. I know, that's easier said than done.

Forwards, Not Backwards

Major media (publishers, television/film studios, record labels) are afraid of innovation. Rather than look to the future, and create engaging products that fans can rally behind, they play it safe and sell what’s sold well in the past.
